MUSIC REVIEW: Brand New – Jesus Christ

When our intern Caitlin at work replied to my question “What’s your favorite song of all time?” I didn’t quite expect what I heard.  First, I had never heard of the band Brand New (yep) and second, the title of the song, Jesus Christ, is not the “usual”.  Henceforth my first impression was “hmm, wonder where they take this one?” (skeptical).  Well, after further review in pulling up the lyrics and listening to what is a seriously reflective and serene musical piece I was convinced of why she choose the song.

Though not ALWAYS the case, I primarily listen to music, watch movies, and watch tv shows in hopes of being transformed, in hopes of gaining new insights on humans and the Creator that made us.  Lyrics like “I know you’ll come in the night like a thief / But Ive had some time alone to hone my lying technique / I know you think that Im someone you can trust / But Im scared Ill get scared and I swear Ill try to nail you back up” meet that standard.

Brand New captures in “Jesus Christ” what so many express in various ways, the seemingly dubious nature of this so-called God.  I beg the question: Do you believe your missing out?  Was Jesus correct when he said, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly”?

I recommend reading the lyrics first.

Lyrics:

Jesus Christ, that’s a pretty face

The kind you’d find on someone that could save
If they don’t put me away
Itll be a miracle

Do you believe you’re missing out?
That everything good is happening somewhere else
But with nobody in your bed
The night is hard to get through

And I will die all alone
And when I arrive I wont know anyone

Well, Jesus Christ, Im alone again
So what did you do those three days you were dead?
Because this problem’s gonna last
More than the weekend

Well, Jesus Christ Im not scared to die
Im a little bit scared of what comes after
Do I get the gold chariot
Do I float through the ceiling

Do I divide and fall apart
Cause my bright is too slight to hold back all my dark
This ship went down in sight of land
And at the gates does Thomas ask to see my hands?

I know you’ll come in the night like a thief
But Ive had some time alone to hone my lying technique
I know you think that Im someone you can trust
But Im scared Ill get scared and I swear Ill try to nail you back up
(everyone now)
So do you think that we could work out a sign
So Ill know it’s you and that it’s over so I won’t even try
I know you’ll come for the people like me
But we all got wood and nails,
Trying to turn our hate in factories
But, we all got wood and nails
tongue tied in hate factories
Yeah, we all got wood and nails
tongue tied in hate factories
Yeah, we all got wood and nails
And we sleep inside of this machine
